Where the Water Carried Us: Lyndsey & Adam’s Sailboat Engagement Session
When Lyndsey told me she wanted to take a sailboat out for her and Adam’s engagement session, my answer was immediate: I am so there.
I love an engagement session that feels like more than a photo shoot—one that gives a couple the chance to have an experience together. Lyndsey and Adam’s evening on the water was romantic, playful, a little adventurous, and completely their own.
We met at the boat ramp in downtown Fernandina Beach and set sail with Windward Sailing, just a couple of hours before sunset. The sky was softly overcast for most of the evening, giving us beautiful, even light while we sailed around Amelia Island. Near the end, the clouds opened just enough for the sun to peek through and change the whole feeling of the sky.
And then there were the dolphins.
They swam all around us as we moved across the water—one of those unexpected little gifts that made the evening feel even more magical. It was the kind of moment you could never fully plan, but you will always remember.
The husband-and-wife crew from Windward Sailing, originally from Africa, was wonderful to work with. They paid attention to the light, angled the boat beautifully, and were always willing to move when I needed a different position. Having a crew who understood what we were creating made it possible for me to work without taking Lyndsey and Adam out of the experience.
Of course, we made time for portraits, but I never wanted the evening to become one long series of poses. I gave them room to sit together, laugh, watch the water, and take in the fact that they are getting married. Some of my favorite photographs came from those quieter spaces in between—the way she settled into him, the way he held her, and the laughter that happened when they were simply enjoying each other.
That is what an engagement session should feel like to me. It is not only about having beautiful photographs for save-the-dates or the wedding website. It is a chance to slow down during a busy season and make a memory together before the wedding day arrives.
Lyndsey and Adam are such a sweet couple, and I cannot wait to photograph their wedding this November. If their engagement session is any indication, their wedding day is going to be filled with tenderness, laughter, and so much genuine connection.
Your engagement session does not have to look like everyone else’s. The most meaningful locations are often the ones connected to something you already love doing together.
If you golf together, let’s spend an evening at the golf course. If Sunday mornings mean coffee at your favorite little shop, we can begin there and wander through downtown afterward. Maybe your story belongs on the family farm, beside a vintage car, at the marina, on the beach, or right at home where the two of you are most comfortable.
You do not need an elaborate idea. You only need something that feels honest to your relationship. When your session includes a piece of your real life, the photographs become more than pretty—they become yours.
